Anonymous on Hacking Singapore

Hello,

If you’ve had internet for the past week, or read the news, you all should now know that a man who claims to be from the group Anonymous is trying to hack Singapore in order for the government to lessen the censorship laws.

Now, one thing. Everyone had to STOP talking about how “incompetent” the Singapore Government has been because the “incompetency” of the PAP is not what Anonymous is fighting for. Anonymous is, however, fighting for the right for Singaporeans to have “free speech” so any arguments about the incompetency of the Singapore government (“TOO MANY IMMIGRANTS”) is irrelevant and not applicable to this entire issue. I went to one of the articles and people were arguing about bubblegum, which I find freaking retarded as f***. So please, nothing about the competency of the PAP.

I also want to state that I don’t think this guy is that closely affiliated with the main core of Anonymous and is most likely a Singaporean using the name of Anonymous. While I know that anyone can technically call themselves part of “Anonymous”, this guy doesn’t seem to be in the rings of Anonymous ( actually know the core teams of Anonymous ).

Why? This entire video, and the tone he/she uses is not similar to other Anonymous videos. His/her actions don’t reflect Anonymous ethos. I mean, this guy calls himself “The Messiah”. The assigning of such a rank of “Messiah” is pretty imperialistic and commanding, two things that Anonymous do not stand for. Furthermore, many of the main cables or areas where Anonymous usually converges have not spoken or made mention of this entire Singapore issue. Yes, I know that there’s no “main website” for Anonymous, but there are still main channels like AnonPress. I find it strange that such an issue as big as ours (this person threatened to hack the SINGAPORE GOVERNMENT) is not mentioned.

Anyway, Anonymous or not, this guy still poses a threat to our Singaporean government and country as a whole. It is foolish to assume that any action made by this dude is only going to affect the top tier of the government and not leak down to the people. And honestly

I do not agree with this guy at all.

Let me clarify myself, I don’t care about what he’s fighting for. He/she could be fighting for the legalisation of bubble gum/ legalising gay marriage/ imposing the sterilisation of cats, I don’t care. As a matter of fact, I’m actually a believer in freedom of speech. Yes yes yes “what about the societal harmony” and whatnot. I would address those concerns but as I said earlier my issue with this dude is not the message itself but the method.

Which leads me to my two semi-rants

1) We should never advocate/promote/encourage/trust “Vigilante Justice”

In two words, this guy is carrying out “Vigilante Justice”, which makes him like Batman. For those who don’t know, vigilante justice has neither a positive nor negative connotation. It just means that someone who is not working for the official rule of law going out and doing actions which he thinks are “justifiable”. This also kind of means that he/she will break the law to do such actions. Famous pop culture examples of vigilante justice would be 1) every superhero ever created 2) robin hood 3) Dexter etc. The problem with the idea of vigilante justice, which is what I find most problematic about this entire issue, lies in the fact that we should never trust one person to take authority, especially someone like a vigilante who proves to be unpredictable.

And in this anonymous issue, who the hell is this guy/girl. I mean, I don’t doubt that this person actually cares about the issue of censorship in Singapore but can you tell me with 100% confidence that there might be a chance that this guy would not cause any danger to Singapore? Many cases of online pedos and Nigerian Princes in the news have shown us time and time again how easy it is to trick people on the internet. And the Anonymous dude said it himself/herself on the video that their actions will cause harm to Singapore economically etc. You can watch the video as proof. Does that not sound the slightest bit scary? Oh yes, the Messiah has even managed to hack into sites like the Ministry Of Health, which holds millions of CLASSIFIED information on Singaporeans. This dude knows EVERYTHING ABOUT YOU. Anyone who claims that this has no chance of being dangerous at all, or this entire issue going the wrong way is crazy or not a Singaporean.

And it honestly doesn’t seem implausible that this guy might do that. I mean look at his actions, hacking into the Singapore government is pretty damn crazy in itself. Someone please tell me that this entire thing doesn’t sound dangerous at all.

2) I don’t want Anonymous to speak for Singapore.

Okay guys, come on. Do you really want a keyboard warrior, or a dude who may be Mas Selamat’s friend deciding Singapore’s affairs for YOU? This is what makes me pissed off, because who is this Anonymous dude to speak for the Singaporean society? Don’t assume that everyone wants freedom of speech, and then singlehandedly make yourself the representative for the “Singaporeans”. And to the recent article on the The Real Citizen, please do not refer to the supporters of this anonymous dude as “Singaporeans” because not everyone agrees.

While I do acknowledge that he/she is extremely brave for doing this, and is at least taking some action to do something about what they believe in (however far removed), people who make change are brave enough to come out and do it. And even though Singapore is restrictive, it is stupid to assume that they kill/imprison political dissidents. There have been hundreds of sites that are AGAINST the PAP and what they stand for. The Real Citizen, The Temasek Times etc. have all existed before this issue, and they have all made big statements against the Singaporean government. During the General Election in 2011, one of the parties on the television actually said ” the PAP has ignored your cries” and nothing had happened to him. And what about the White Paper protest and the influx of social media activism? And Free My Internet was a huge thing as well!

I’m not saying that we are extremely free in Singapore, but I do believe that you can speak out for issues like this and not be killed or thrown in jail. And I do believe that yes, most Singaporeans nowadays will speak out if they are not happy with the government. I mean come on, we finally booted out the PAP from Aljunied in 2011 and put in the Workers Party, what do you MEAN when you say Singaporeans can’t do anything about their state of affairs? We have also managed to elect a ton of Workers Party representatives into parliament ever since.

So, knowing all of this (tracing back to my main point), how can we let an anonymous dude like this speak on behalf of the Singaporeans? I don’t need statistics to tell you that a majority of Singaporeans are fine with censorship. And coming from a person like me who is against censorship, this dude still really pisses me off, because he/she is trying to impose a set of beliefs onto using threats and not proper reasons as to why we should agree with his views.

You make change by convincing the people, and it is in the power of the people to make the change, because thank god for the concept of universal suffrage. Workers Party did not win Aljunied and other SMC’s by threatening the PAP. Nelson Mandela did not win Africa by threatening White Afrikaners. If you want to make change, come out and do it properly. If no one agrees and nothing happens, then its obvious that your interests are misaligned with what the people really want. If you want to make change, do it by winning the people who make up a country: the citizens. Because no government in this world can withstand the power of its own citizens, because the citizens are the ones who run the gears of the country.

And if you’re a Singaporean supporting what Anonymous stands for, then good for you. We should have a freedom to believe in what we want to believe (this obviously has some parameters but I’m not gonna go into that because thats a different argument entirely). I know I can’t deny what this Anonymous guy is saying about censorship in Singapore has some truth to it. But if you really want to make the change, don’t put your faith into this Anonymous dude and his actions. You’re a citizen for a reason, you have the power to vote. And if you dislike what PAP is doing, then vote out them out in the next election. I believe that we all can promote the right to freedom of speech in Singapore, or any cause we believe in through other methods, not hacking into websites and sending direct offensives. We are the Singaporeans and we are the shakers of this country.

Okay back from all that get high emotional talk. I will summarise by saying this: I believe in freedom of speech, but the message here is not important. What is important, and what I hate about this anonymous person, is the way that this person is trying to take away the power of choice from the Singaporeans by imposing his/her views on us, and I distrust this person, because we never know what he/she may do.

okay im done

Hello,

It has come to the time where I have to make another semi-important decision of what HSS I want to take. They said we could change but it’s kind of stupid to do that. Sorry I’m laughing like shit after watching this.

WATCH WITH VOLUME, OBSERVE THE AWKWARDNESS, LISTEN TO THE INDIAN WOMAN HOLDING THE CAMERA, WATCH THE END and be a BIT BIT BIT stereotypical and be open to Indian Humor.

Okay back to the main topic. Initially, I really wanted to take economics. Why? My entire family has taken economics. My mum took it, my dad tried (but did really badly so he dropped it lol), eldest sister took it and got A’s all the way and my second sister took it (idk about her but she seems to be fine). It also seems to be the most applicable (?) out of the four humanities because of stock market and whatever. Furthermore, it seems pretty manageable since it’s all sort of systematic.  But after today’s humanities talk in the LT I really feel kind of “spoilt for choice” cause they’re all really interesting! I’m actually kind of attracted to Anthropology but I’m probably not going to take it because it’s a bit too “fluffy” for me. You also need to write argumentatives well but I kind of suck at that. Geography seems really fun as well and I’m considering it. History seems okay and I’ve always been interested in History but I’m not good at content heavy stuff.

Oh I also got into A Math. I actually don’t give a damn about that one since I’m not interested in taking math HL because I have never been amazing at math and my family is full of math fails. Really the fact that I’m sort of the “best” at math in my family really says something about the standards. But as Nike says, JUST DO IT (if you are offered and its exclusive). Something like that. So yea, I’ll be taking it.

After that, I received my marks back. I’m actually very satisfied with them considering the fact that I did not study that much. DISCLAIMER: I DID STUDY I mean I didn’t just go like oh screw THAT and went to watch movies. I did put in effort.

And I’m also left with a final conundrum of whether to continue with physics or not. I really hate physics because it’s lame and I hate it. I like chemistry alot and I really want to take it. I feel like if I didn’t have to worry about learning physics shit I can focus on chemistry more. BUT EVERYONES JUST LIKE OH NO TAKE TWO SCIENCES YOU DONT KNOW YADAYADA but I really REALLY DETEST AND HATE THE CRAP out of physics and I’m very sure I want to take chemistry. BUT THEN…. AIYA.

Okay so bye bye I need to go talk to my mum about my future good luck

Update on my life

Hi friends,

Nobody wants to hear this and I’m being very self absorbed and superficial and this entire post will be dedicated to me so if you’re not interested in my life then too bad.

Okay so lets start, the exam was what I expected and I’m prepared for any results that come my way because 1) i didnt study that much 2) i’m year 3 no one gives a damn 3) okay i did study but i think i probably deserve whatever marks I get.

Literature was pretty easy= what I expected. I mean like, if you COMPLETELY didn’t expect that it was going to be Mark Antony’s speech then tops to you for not thinking properly. IHSS was okay I guess, population pyramids are fun but I’m still sticking to my interests and choosing economics. I can’t say much about Chinese knowing my ability level (which is somewhere between shitty and godawful). It’s a subject in which I actually go into the exam hall knowing that there’s a 60% chance I may fail if I don’t concentrate properly (the number may be higher).

Physics was actually quite easy, but Physics is the freaking loser nerd of science and gay so NO WAY IN HELL am I taking double science next year. And no I’m not sorry and no, I don’t regret not paying attention at all this year during physics class. I think I’ve probably sang 20 entire musicals during physics class since I was so goddamn bored. I think splitting up the math papers were retarded but they were okay except that I messed up paper 2 and there is a 40% chance I may fail but oh well I was never born to be a science child and my entire family sucks at math. I also forgot how to calculate standard deviation (lol im a freaking genius right) so I faked my standard deviation.

Chemistry was actually quite fun I thought it was quite easy. Yep okay not saying I’m the godmother of chemistry or that I’m amazing or anything but I think that it’s something I’m actually quite interested in (surprise surprise), so I wanna continue learning more about it. I’m actually a closet geek (i ❤ star trek/star wars/lord of the rings/history/the ocean/space/magical realism) so I’m dying to learn organic chemistry

I’m not joking.

Last chinese paper was okay as I said earlier my chinese grades are like a woman on PMS so don’t expect anything.

SO after the exam I was really really really happy because I can have fun with impunity and not be secretly judged by my ultra asian mom (she liberalised herself to try and fit in with her kids so props to her) (she made me play piano every day and scolded me when i hit the wrong notes is that not asian enough). I went out and planned some future dates for my life.

AND I FINALLY WENT OUT TO MAKAN with my O3 friends THIS IS A BREAKTHROUGH because I love eating with friends and its the first time they’ve actually went out with me :’)  (I’m desperate for friends). It was in geylang (hehs) but it was still really nice just sitting down and eating zi char.

Anyway, I went to work today and I’m ultra happy because I got a pay raise.

And I’m pretty packed next week because I have jam sessions, eating tian tian chicken rice, playing rock band with jokhymshi, possibly going to haji lane to makan murtabak, taiwan shopping….

Oh yes speaking of taiwan. I’m quite happy that I got in and I’m quite excited to be going as well because I’ve never been to taiwan. The culture interests me because they’ve had such a turbulent history and its kind of a weird mix between Japanese influences/nationalist movements by KMT/ china culture/ anti china culture/ hokkieness (?)/ western-is. So I’m pretty interested to see how it all plays out.

I hear that it has amazing oyster omlette so I’m clearly going to eat it.

AND we’re going to be staying on a mountain!!!! Not a gay hill or a pile of rocks but a REAL ASS MOUNTAIN!!!!!!!!! The last time I went on one was last year during OGL in Malaysia actually but that doesn’t count cause we spent more time walking up at 4am in the morning as compared to actually staying there. The REAL last time I stayed on a mountain was when I was 6 and we went to Mount Ophir or Gunung Ledang and the campsite was seriously haunted and a woman apparently got possessed in the next campsite and a bomoh had to  come to exorcise her IM NOT MAKING THIS UP. Okay so back to the point, I’m also excited because apparently it will be fall and like, a nice temperature of 17 degrees. AHHHHH.

Hahas okay thats the end of my super long self absorbed post on my life so far. I’m very excited tomorrow because my grandma is cooking nasi lemak in her house.

WISHING THE WORLD HAPPINESS IN THE ENDING OF EXAMS

Dramas

Hello,

Its 11am in the morning and I am up writing this post because I really don’t want to study anything. This is probably why I get quite shit marks so please bear with me as I procrastinate.

Speaking of procrastination, I’m starting to reminisce on my younger days. Before I had a phone (I got a proper one after PSLE) or social media (which destroyed my life), I only had my televsion, an old windows PC and books to rely on for entertainment.

Ahhhh the good old days where I was such a model child. I came home immediately after school. When I got back, I’d read for hours on end and I could finish a whole Michael Crichton novel in like 5 hours (average reading time varies now). But more importantly, I spent my entire childhood watching soap operas or drama serials.

I pretty much got into this habit ever since I was young since my grandma would always come to my house and watch them. There was an entire period of my life where I used to run home from school to watch The Bold And The Beautiful, or, a show that has been running for like 30 years.

ANYWAY, here is a list of some of my favourite childhood dramas.

1) Days Of Our Lives

WOW okay I can’t believe I used to watch it. It’s a soap opera that is notorious for being the longest running TV series. It started airing in 1965 and is still going on today. It has a total of 47 seasons and aired its 12,000th episode in January this year. WOAH. I forgot what channel it was on but I watched it alot when I was super young when it aired at like, 2:30pm or something like that.

Anyway, I somehow fell out of fashion with it because nothing ever gets resolved and it just drags on and on. It also takes like one million episodes for them to finish a dinner party so obviously it got retarded after a while. But here is the intro!

2) Tofu Street

Okay, I watched the rerun of this show because it originally aired in the 90s and I wasn’t born yet. It was also made in the time where mediacorp was known as TCS and damn thats OLD.

This is one of series that was made before the age of horrible quality SIngaporean Television. Yes, Singaporean TV actually used to be really nice. Basically, this show is set in the 1950s and is centred around the life of a Chinese immigrant who comes to Amoy Street (also known as tofu street, hence the name) and starts up a beancurd shop.

Anyway, I can’t really remember much about this show since I was like primary one when I watched the rerun. Channel 8 PLEASE show a rerun of this soon. Alternatively, someone uploaded all the episodes on youtube so yes I will be watching them after EOYs

I love the theme song

3) The Bold And The Beautiful

This is very similar to days of our lives and is half as long but still pretty damn long. Its about a woman named Brooks and when the series started she was like 20 and now shes around like, 60. She may even be dead but Idk about that because I don’t watch the show. I actually hated it initially cause my grandma would always hog the TV to watch it when I WANTED TO WATCH TOM AND JERRY GODDAMNIT.

Actually thinking back, all these shows were freaking trashy.

4) Holland V

AHHHH i remember this show. I watched this when I was like… 5 or 6! I don’t remember what actually happened but it has something or another to do with a nasi lemak stall in Holland V. It has all the elements of a channel 8 drama (scroll to appendix to see what those are i.e Jeanette Aw) and it was freaking addictive.

I hate this intro but it would be unfair not to put the intro anyway.

5) Ai (爱)

This taiwanese drama is probably also one of the longest draggiest shows ever but I absolutely loved it. Hehs. I remember watching it whenever it aired and I would sing along to the theme song. And even in like the coffee shop, whenever this show comes on, all the uncles and aunties would stop what they were doing and watch it. Wasted childhood. On the other hand, #sendkhymfongforTaiwanMedici

wa mern thie wa mern thie! kam beh tang mai chon tie!!!!! (idk how I should spell hokkien since it has no alphabet so i ripped this off some website)

6) Double Happiness

I love this show! I watched it in it’s original run when I was like, K2/P1 and I watched the rerun again when I was P6 so I actually remember what happened. I’m pretty sure you’ve seen it somewhere because apparently it just had another rerun? Anyway, it’s about this family that owns a fish and chips store which is really famous. Maybe memory is subjective but I loved this show so much and is one of the channel 8 dramas that DOES NOT HAVE JEANETTE AW IN IT. It also was split up into 2 seasons and altogether had around 100+ episodes.

It was THE 7 O’CLOCK SHOW (scroll down to appendix as well)

Anyway, I was so sad when it ended because I loved watching the show so much but damn it felt good when the evil bitch ex-mistress woman got what she deserved HAHS.

7) Tayong Dalawa

The theme song of this Filippino Drama is probably the only Filippino song I can sing. This was one of the more recent dramas that I was addicted to and it had around like 89 1-hour episodes. I just did some research and apparently it’s originally meant to be half and hour episodes ?!!!! I would’ve died of suspense by the end of it.

The story is about two brothers who are birthed by different brothers but had the same dad who was in the military or something like that. They both grew up in different households. Dave was rich and JR was poor. The points of contention are their different mothers, JR’s mum being really nice and Dave’s mum being a complete bitch. There’s also the main character Audrey who they both fall in love with. So yea, this series was really really touching and I cried a shitload at the ending because it was so sad. Yes, I CRIED BUCKETS. I’m not gonna spoil it for anyone who hasn’t watched it but if you really are curious please read number 4 of the appendix below.

And omgI loved the English Dubbing cracks me up every time.

As I’ve said, this theme is the only Filippino song I can sing

8) The Little Nyonya

HOW CAN YOU NOT KNOW THIS SHOW ARE YOU NOT A SINGAPOREAN.

This was, the 7 o’clock show. I used to watch it faithfully every day when I was 10/11 and yes Jeanette Aw was in it but she was pretty good! It has pretty much all the “famous” names and it was really nice that my grandma bought the box set for us (?!) which I still have btw. And yes, I cried so much at many points of this drama serial. I like this series so much because its such a true representation of the baba culture and Singapore in general. I mean like, okay ya Nyonyas didn’t all speak Mandarin daily but still the essence of the culture is there.

The ending also made me cry (see appendix for spoilers). I love the theme song too.

Anyway, I’ve watched alot more dramas than these but that will be another time I guess. Sadly, I don’t really watch drama series or soap operas or TV in general because I don’t really like TV that much anymore (I watch discovery channel when I do). Really love all these serials and I hope someone at Mediacorp one day scratches their head and is like “why don’t we do what we used to do and make good drama serials again?”. I do miss watching the 7 o’clock or the 9 o’clock shows and I hope we get another like Tofu Street or Little Nyonya sometime soon.

Good luck for EOYs everybody.
